Walnut slices

Walnut slices

Another family favourite. Especially for a youngster. It is as simple for a ten-year-old helping her mother, as it is for a grown up with very little time.

You can substitute some of the ingredients. Honey for syrup. Cane sugar for brown sugar. Pecans for walnuts. Gluten free options for plain flour.

  • 2oz (50g) marg
  • 1 level desert spoon of syrup
  • 4oz (100g) brown sugar
  • 4oz (100g) plain flower
  • 1 1/2 level teaspoon baking powder
  • 2oz (50g) chopped walnuts
  • 1 egg beaten
  • icing sugar

  • Preheat the oven to 190C / 375F / Gas mark 5
  • Grease a 7″ round or square baking tin
  • Melt the marg, syrup and sugar over a low heat
  • Remove from the heat and stir in the flour, baking powder and walnuts
  • Stir in the beaten egg
  • Spread into the tin
  • Bake for 25/30 minutes in the centre of the oven
  • Allow to cool
  • Dust with icing sugar through a sieve
  • Cut into squares
